March 2019 Ring Report

The March meeting started off with a workshop with several tables set up around the room. Presenting the workshop/demonstrations were Jordan Vo, Matthew Jones, Robert Teszka, Chris Estrada, Bryn Williams, John Stenning, Graham Kita and Cameron Minty. Cameron also brought along his new close-up pad for all to see.
There were two competitions at this month’s meeting. The first competition was for the Rick Honey trophy which is awarded in recognition of excellence in comedy magic by a junior member. The second competition was for the Cecil Ackery trophy. This trophy is awarded in recognition of excellence in comedy magic by an adult member.
Last year’s winner, Rod Boss was not able to attend the meeting to perform his MC duties as he was in the hospital. Yoosik Oum, our competition chair was the MC and host for the competitions. Tommy Zhu entered the Junior Comedy Magic competition for the Rick Honey trophy, his first ever competition at Ring 92. Though he did not qualify for the award this time, he presented an entertaining and original comedy card-throwing act and displayed great showmanship. Tommy is the club’s newest junior member.
The competitors for the Cecil Ackery trophy were Ed Stehr, Ed Goldberg, Alex Zander and Glen LaBarre. The winner of the Cecil Ackery trophy for 2019 was Glen LaBarre. Ed Goldberg came in second place. Congratulations to Glen and to all of the competitors. Yoosik Oum collected the score sheets and Care Elise Dyck tallied the scores. Jordan Vo did some comedy magic in between the acts to keep the competition flowing.
During the business portion of the meeting, President Bryn Williams thanked the members for attending the 2019 installation and awards banquet which was a huge success. Everyone was happy with the location, food and service.
Members were reminded about the Ice McDonald lecture and show which will take place on Saturday, April 20 at the Inlet Theatre in Port Moody.
Mike Vetterli introduced himself and welcomed the guests to the club meeting. Mike will be our new “Ambassador” for the club. Lon Mandrake was selling his new book The Real Mandrake the Magician which was written by Linda and Lon Mandrake. Dennis Chan sold raffle tickets. Wiley Allen was the winner of the 50/50 draw. Bryn Williams and Graham Kita took photos of the evening’s events. Cameron Minty did the videography. Two people signed up as new members.
There were 28 members and 5 guests in attendance. After the meeting, several members went to the Knight and Day restaurant for a mini jam session.
