October 2019 Ring Report

The October meeting started off with the regular teach a trick session. The teachers for this meeting were Rob Teszka, Jordan Vo, and Shawn Farquhar. After the teach a trick session, Shawn Farquhar gave an excellent workshop on cellphone magic and several card effects using gimmicked hotel cards. He was even generous enough to give everyone the gimmicks so that the members could start performing right away. Special thanks to Shawn for lending the Vancouver Magic Circle his theatre for the James Brown lecture.
The October meeting is always Halloween themed. There is also a Halloween competition for the Tip Top and Tootsie trophy. This trophy is awarded for excellence in a Halloween themed performance by a junior or an adult member. At least one magical effect, close-up, parlour or stage must be included in the routine.
Yoosik Oum, our competition chair is in charge of this event. David Yoo, last year’s winner was the host and M C for this event. David read the rules. The competitors were Robert Teszka, Yoosik Oum, Cameron Minty and John Stenning. Robert Teszka was the winner. Congratulations to Robert and to the rest of the competitors. David did some magic in between the acts to keep the competition flowing. Yoosik Oum collected the score sheets and he also tallied the scores.
The business portion of the meeting included the Christmas Pot luck and the “bring a gift, get a gift exchange.” Graham Kita and Dennis Chan are in charge of this fun filled event.
Of course, what would the evening be without the club’s most famous Halloween dressup contest? The winner is determined by the amount of applause by the members. Bryn Williams was the M C for this hilarious event. The competitors were Claire-Ly Lee, Marianne Dumay, Graham Kita, Alex Zander , Gabriella Lester and Kiera Zoe Vo. By process of elimination, Gabriella Lester and Kiera Zoe Vo were the winners. They were dressed as a farmer and her little pumpkin. Congratulations to Gabriella and Kiera and to the rest of the competitors. Kiera is the 2 ½ year old daughter of Care Elise and Jordan Vo.
Care Elise provided the refreshments for the evening. There were sausage rolls, rice krispies squares, pizza buns, spaghetti, muffins, short bread and a fruit platter. Thank you very much Care for putting a fantastic spread. Everyone enjoyed it.
It was nice to see Alex Zander who just came off a five month long road tour. Alex is the newly elected President of the I.B.M. for the 2019/2020 magic season. He reminded the members about the Three of Clubs Convention . He mentioned that the convention will have a star studded programme. There will be a show featuring magicians from Vancouver Island. The featured lecturers are Bizzaro, David Paar, Jason Verners and Chris Philpot. Special personal workshops will be put on by Bizzaro and David Paar. There is an extra cost for these two workshops. The special magic performance will take place at the Vogue theatre featuring Piff the Magic Dragon and is included with your registration.
Gabriella Lester handed out the new name tags which were made by Shawn Farquhar. It was nice to see Bill and Claire-ly Lee whom we haven’t seen since the installation banquet in February. Bryn Williams, Gabriella Lester, Roy Hopwood, and Graham Kita took photos of the evening’s events. Cameron Minty did the videography. Dennis Chan sold 50/50 tickets. Kim Fabbro was the winner of the 50/50 draw. There were 35 members and 8 guests in attendance.
