August 2020 Ring Report

- Ring Report submitted by Dennis Chan -

As we do not normally meet in July, President Rod Boss decided to have a July meeting which gave us a chance to get caught up on some VMC business. This meeting was also done online via Zoom. Topics discussed were the Children’s Magician of the Year competition, the Comedy competition and the annual picnic.

Special guest lecturer and performer for the evening was Louie Foxx. He is from Des Moines. He started off his lecture with a card in envelope followed by a giant colour changing card from a large envelope. He gave explanations on how to performed the effects. He performed a three ball routine using the pop up move. The finale of the routine was a giant ball to a streamer. He showed a video of this routine. He mentioned that he enjoys performing at fairs and always has thimbles in his pocket so he can perform magic at any time. He also demonstrated some of his thimble moves. He performed a one cup routine with dice using the two in the hand and one in the pocket principle. The finale was two large dice. He showed how to make a finger tip with a magnet. During his lecture, he showed different video clips of his performances. He showed his method of the card stab. During his lecture, Louie encouraged magicians to push their magic further by improving upon the ending to an effect or routine. He likes to try new things. He also performed a mismade U.S. one dollar bill and also demonstrated how to split a U.S. dollar bill. He also performed a penetration of a silk through a coat hanger and a three shell game. All of his effects have high entertainment value and is suitable for all ages.

Rod thanked Louie for a great lecture and workshop. Rod mentioned that this was the best lecture/workshop that he has seen in a long time. Thank you Louie. During the meeting, outgoing I.B.M. President Alex Zander presented Presidential Citations to Shawn Farquhar, Rod Boss, Dennis Chan and Graham Kita for their service and dedication to Magic and to the Vancouver Magic Circle. Thanks Alex. There were 28 participants.
