April 2021 Ring Report

The April meeting started off with a chat session amongst the members. President Rod Boss welcomed the members to the meeting. Many thanks to Rod Boss for updating the roster list for 2021. Rod mentioned that the roster list is ready to be downloaded. Graham Kita, Roy Hopwood, Shawn Farquhar and Dennis Chan also assisted Rod with this difficult task.
Rod thanked Dr. Simon Cassegrain for creating an app for tallying the competition scores. To start the evening’s activities Rod showed some video clips from the club’s library.
Competition time. The competition for this month was for the Charles Howard trophy. This trophy is awarded in recognition of excellence in magic using gimmicks in a card effect or routine. During the course of the routine or effect, a gimmick must be used. (i.e. gimmicked card, gimmicked wallet, gimmicked device etc.) The spirit of this competition is to encourage the use of gimmicks to enhance magic. Scott Jansen and Jordan Vo are in charge of the competitions. Rod Boss was the M C for the competition. Jordan Vo read the rules. The competitors ( in order of appearance which were selected by a carnival type wheel) were Robert Teszka, Cameron Minty, Rod Chow, Rick Mearns, Roy Hopwood, John Stenning and Glen LaBarre. The judges were Graham Kita, Simon Cassegrain, Steve Bocska, David Hamil and Yoosik Oum. Rod Boss was the timekeeper. The scores were tallied by Jordan Vo via computer by using Dr. Simon Cassegrain’s new scoring app. Thank you Simon. This new app made it much easier to tally the scores. Rick Mearns was the winner. Rod Chow came in second place and Glen LaBarre came in third place. One competitor was disqualified for going overtime. Congratulations to Rick Mearns and to the rest of the competitors.
In between the acts Rod Boss gave away some very expensive specialty playing cards. Congratulations to Lon and Linda Mandrake for celebrating 47 years of marriage. After the meeting, Rod Boss had a chat session with Justin Louie, a Victoria Magic Circle member. There were 36 participants in attendance.
