January 2021 Ring Report
- Ring Report submitted by Dennis Chan -
The January meeting started off with a recap of the club’s events for 2020 by president Rod Boss. He thanked the members and out of town guests for participating in the zoom meetings. This was also election night for the 2021 executive. Graham Kita presided over the election process. Positions to be filled were President, 1st VP, 2nd VP, secretary, treasurer, and sergeant-at-arms. The board slate for 2021 is:
- President: Rod Boss
- 1st VP: Care Elise
- 2nd VP: Yoosik Oum
- Treasurer: Roy Hopwood
- Secretary: Roy Hopwood
- Sergeant-at- arms: Dennis Chan
Graham Kita invited additional names from the membership for the above positions. There were no other nominees. By acclamation the above nominees have accepted their positions. Congratulations to the new executive for the 2021 magic year. They will be sworn in at the installation ceremony in February. Other committee members are Scott Jansen and Jordan Vo. They will share the duties of the competition chair. Gabriella Lester will remain as junior director. Graham Kita will retain his position as a director.
This was also initiation night for new members who have not gone through this ceremony in order to become a full fledged member of the Vancouver Magic Circle. Members must perform three magical effects to the satisfaction of the rest of the members in order to take part in the initiation ceremony. Members performing their three effects were Scott Barker, Magic Michael Likey, Harmony Woodington and Alan Yorke. The actual initiation ceremony will take place at another time and place when COVID restrictions allow.
The annual auction which normally takes place in September, will take place online in February. The dates are from Monday, February 15 through to Thursday, February 25. Care Elise and Jordan Vo are organizing and overseeing this event and will be using auctria. Thanks to Graham Kita for taking photos of the extra books from the VMC that are going to be auctioned off.
Nominations ballots were announced for the Murray award for the most creative performance during the course of the year. The nominees are Don Pacht, Simon Cassegrain, Jordan Vo and Rick Mearns. Nomination ballots were also announced for the Kramien award for showmanship in a performance during the course of the year. The nominees are Rod Chow, and Steve Bocska. Members sent in their votes electronically to Graham Kita and the winners will be announced at the installation ceremony in February.
This was also past president’s night, whereby past presidents are invited to join in on the fun and present their one trick to the Circle that they helped build. Alex Zander presented his one effect. One trick night by members did not take place.
Members were reminded about the installation ceremony and magic show on Saturday, February 27 via Zoom. Many thanks to Shawn Farquhar and Graham Kita for helping out with the zoom meeting when Rod Boss’s laptop crashed. There were 37 participants at the meeting. Alex Zander made a cameo appearance to promote his new magic programme called Game Night, which apparently was sold out. Congratulations! Alex.
Before the start of the meeting, Past I.B.M. president Joe Turner was the featured lecturer. The magical effects he presented were a shoelace on a ring, 10 signed cards across from the hand to the pocket, bottle production using the zone zero principle and several card effects and card techniques. He gave very detailed prescriptions on how to perform the effects. It was an excellent lecture.
