March 2021 Ring Report

- Ring Report submitted by Dennis Chan -

It has been a year since the Vancouver Magic Circle has been holding their monthly meetings via zoom. Many thanks to president Rod Boss for setting up the zoom meetings, lectures and workshops via zoom.

President Rod Boss welcomed the members and out of town guests to the March meeting. There was also an interview with Bro. Gilbert, a former member of the Vancouver Magic Circle whom we haven’t seen for quite a while. He is busy with his magic life and magic activities.

The club was saddened to hear of the passing of David Murdoch. David was along time member of the Vancouver Magic Circle and was president in 1968 and 1964. He was inducted as a life member in 1999. He was also an I.B.M. Order of Merlin. Another member who also passed away was Leonard Lauk. He was also known as Len. Their write ups are in the February 2021 issue of the Linking Ring. It has also been a year that former member of the Vancouver Magic Circle Steve Dickson had passed away. He was also a member of the Fraser Valley Magic Circle. The Broken Wand Ceremony for them will be held at a later date when time and space permits.

March is when we have the competition for the Cecil Ackery trophy for excellence in comedy magic. This is an adult competition. The Rick Honey trophy which is a competition for juniors for excellence in comedy magic was not contested. Scott Jansen and Jordan Vo are in charge of the competitions. Rod Boss was the MC for the competition. The competitors for the Cecil Ackery trophy (in order of appearance) were Ed Stehr, John Stenning, Steve Bocska, Roy Hopwood and Cameron Minty. The judges were Wiley Allen, Robert Teszka, Alex Zander, Graham Kita and Lon Mandrake. Jordan Vo was the timekeeper and he also tallied the scores via computer. Well done Jordan. The winner was Steve Bocska, in second place was Roy Hopwood and third place was Ed Stehr. Congratulations to Steve and to the rest of the competitors. One competitor was disqualified for going over the ten minute time limit.

After the meeting, there was a chat session amongst the members. There were 40 participants in attendance.

David Jonathan lecture: On Saturday, March 20, 2021 the Vancouver Magic Circle presented a lecture featuring David Jonathan. The lecture was hosted by president Rod Boss. Rod greeted and welcomed David Jonathan to Vancouver and he also greeted the members and out of town guests.

David’s lecture started off with some card effects. Then he did some card prediction effects using envelopes. He also showed how to use glue sticks on certain cards in order to attain maximum results. He did a book test using several cards with the ” one ahead ” principle. He also did some mentalism and prediction effects with Uno cards, rainbow decks, and some specially marked cards which blended extremely well with the design of the cards which were almost invisible. He also did some effects using audience participation. After performing each effect, he explained how to perform the effects in great detail and the finer points of the effect and the psychology behind it.

After the lecture, David had products that can be purchased through his website. Rod Boss thanked David for a fantastic lecture. The members also thanked David for a great lecture. There were 35 participants in attendance.
