May 2021 Ring Report

The May meeting opened with a chat session amongst the members, then president Rod Boss greeted the members and guests. Rod reminded the members to register on line for the July I.B.M. convention. Rod mentioned that the 2021 roster books are available for purchase. The roster list can also be downloaded through the computer. He also mentioned the possibility of having a picnic in August. Rod then mentioned that the lecture for the evening was by the Toronto Magic Company.

Alex Zander the introduced the comedy team of Ben Train and Jonah Babins. During their lecture, they showed how to lap a pencil, and performed torn and restored napkin by using a thumb tip. They also performed a lace through a small pepper in the hand by using the grandma’s necklace principle. They also talked about virtual magic conventions. They also made references with some effects by using some Tarbell books. Rod thanked Ben and Jonah for a great lecture.

May is close-up competition night. This competition is for the H.B. MacLean trophy. This is an adult competition. This trophy is awarded in recognition of excellence in close-up magic. In this competition no playing cards or stage effects will be permitted. The spirit of this competition is to encourage growth in the field of restaurant, table, trade show and walk around style magic. Scott Jansen and Jordan Vo are in charge of the competitions. Last year’s winner, Rod Chow was the host and MC for this competition. Jordan Vo read the rules. The competitors ( in order of appearance ) were Scott Barker, Rick Mearns, John Stenning and Henry Tom. The judges were Alex Zander, Graham Kita, Rod Boss, Yoosik Oum and Lon Mandrake. Cameron Minty was the timekeeper.

In between the acts Rod Chow told magic stories and talked about the magical activities of the S.A.M. while the scores were being tallied by Jordan Vo by using the new scoring app which was created by Dr. Simon Cassegrain. Henry Tom was the winner. John Stenning came in second place. Congratulations to Henry and to the rest of the competitors. Thank you Rod Chow for doing an excellent job as MC. The junior competition did not take place.

After the competition, Rod Chow presented his solar system act. Well done Rod. There was also another chat session after the meeting. There were 39 participants in attendance.
