The Vancouver Magic Circle’s annual Christmas get-together took place on Thursday, November 25 2021 via zoom. The meeting opened at 6:30 p.m. President Rod Boss greeted the member and guests. Some members dressed up for the occasion. Rod Boss and Yoosik Oum hosted the meeting.
The meeting opened with a zoom show by Tim Ellis from Australia which was created expressly for the members of the Vancouver Magic Circle. Many thanks to Shawn Farquhar for booking this extraordinary performer. Then Rod introduced Tim to the members of the Vancouver Magic Circle. During Tim’s show, he played some video clips of his performances. His show included card in envelope, disappearing and appearing salt from a bill that was in the shape of a cone, card prediction from envelope, multiplying billiard balls, book magic prediction, poker chip magic, linking safety pins, coin magic and a gypsy thread routine. It was a very entertaining show. Rod thanked Tim for a great show.
After the show, it was competition time. There were two competitions. The first one was for the William Shelly trophy. This is an adult competition which is awarded for excellence in stage magic and the second competition was for the Percy Poole trophy. This is a competition which is awarded for excellence in stage magic by a junior member. Rod Boss, the winner of the 2019 competition was the host and M C for the two competitions. (the 2020 adult and junior competitions were not contested) He read the rules for both competitions.
Seeing as there were no venues where performers could present their programs, the competitions were done via a pre recorded video or live from their home. The competitors for the William Shelly trophy (in order of appearance) were Rod Chow, David Hamil, Graham Kita, Yoosik Oum and Alex Zander. Yoosik Oum was the only live performer. All other performances were done via video. Alex Zander was the winner of the 2021 William Shelly trophy. Rod Chow came in second place. Congratulations to Alex and to the rest of the competitors.
For the Percy Poole competition, Gabriella Lester was the only junior competitor. Her performance was also done via video. She scored enough points to be awarded the Percy Poole trophy. Congratulations Gabriella.
All performances were within the ten minute time limit. The scores were relayed via computer to Simon Cassegrain who tallied the totals. Scott Jansen announced the winners.
After the competitions, Rod chatted with the performers. Gabriella Lester was not available so Harmony Woodington spoke for her on her behalf. Steve Braybrooke thanked the committee for their dedication to the club. Graham Kita booked Michael Ammar to do a lecture on Thursday, December 16 2021. Thanks Graham. After the meeting, there was a chat session amongst the members. Rod sent a message that Tim Ellis sent an E- book to the club as an early Christmas gift. Thanks Tim.
There were 30 participants in attendance.
