October 2021 Ring Report
- Ring Report submitted by Dennis Chan -
The October meeting took place on Thursday, October 28 2021 via zoom. President Rod Boss opened the meeting fifteen minutes before the actual start of the meeting time. This extra time gave the members some chat time. He then greeted the members.
The meeting opened with a broken wand ceremony to remember three members who passed away this year. The members were Dave Murdoch, Leonard Lauk and Steve Dickson. Shawn Farquhar conducted the ceremony by giving a short biography of each of the members. This was followed by a moment of silence. Thank you Shawn.
The October meeting is always Halloween themed. There is also a Halloween competition for the Tip Top and Tootsie trophy. This trophy is awarded for excellence in a Halloween themed performance by a junior or adult member. At least one magical effect, close-up, parlour or stage must be included in the routine. Scott Jansen and Jordan Vo are in charge of the competitions. Rod Boss introduced the competitors. The competitors were Yoosik Oum, John Stenning and Roy Hopwood. The winner was Roy Hopwood. Congratulations to Roy and to the rest of the competitors. Michael Nemeth was the time keeper. Jordan Vo tallied the scores via computer and he also told some Halloween stories in between the acts by using a “Dracula” accent. Well done Jordan.
Of course what would the evening be without the club’s most fun filled event which is the Halloween dress up contest. The competitors for this event were Graham Kita, Rod Boss, Roy Hopwood, Scott Barker, Shawn Farquhar and Denzil John Asche. Members then sent in their votes via computer to Jordan Vo who then tallied the scores. The winner was Roy Hopwood who was dressed up as a witch. Congratulations to Roy and to the rest of the competitors. There was also a chat session during the costume contest.
After the competition Jordan Vo and Rod Boss did some magic. Henry Tom showed a video clip of Steve Dickson performing magic at different venues with a Nat King Cole song, “Unforgettable” playing in the background. It was very touching. Thanks Henry. Other members who also paid tribute to Steve were John Stenning, Rod Boss, Michael Nemeth, Shawn Farquhar, Jordan Vo and Graham Kita. Thanks everyone.
The business portion of the meeting included talking about the Christmas party which will not happen again at the hall because of the strict COVID rules regarding social gatherings. It will again be held via zoom. More details to follow. Members were also reminded about the January election of new officers for the 2022 magic year. Newer members were reminded about the initiation ceremony which also takes at the January meeting. Rod thanked everyone for attending the meeting.
There were 22 members in attendance.
