February 2022 Ring Report

The Vancouver Magic Circle held its prestigious installation and awards program on Thursday, February 24, 2022 online via zoom. The “doors” opened at 6:45 p.m. for a chat session. Then at 7:00 p.m. President Rod Boss greeted the members and guests.

Rod Boss was the Master of Ceremonies for the evening. He then handed out the awards. Terri Kita was the recipient of the Helping Hands certificate. Rod also handed out the Vancouver Magic Circle loyalty pins. Receiving their one year pins were Steve Bocska, Ken Cowie, Greg Dietlein, Donovan Atreides, John Ha, Jonathan Santiago, Derek Morrison, Tai Nguyen, Harmony Woodington, Shawn Phelps, and Justin Louie. The five year pins went to Rod Boss, Yoosik Oum, Ed Stehr, Cameron Minty, Marianne Dumay, Kaj Eijlers, and Kim Fabbro. The ten year pins went to Glen Andrews, Billy Hsueh, Bruce Meyers, John Stenning and Wiley Allen. The fifteen year pins went to Jack Chow, Errol Lipschitz, Amanda O’Leary, Frank Pataki, Tony Wilson, Werner De Schaetzen, and Murray Hatfield. There were no twenty year recipients. The twenty-five year pins went to Graham Kita, Rob Tomkow and Jack Lillico. The thirty year pins went to Lon Mandrake, Jack Poulter, Dennis Chan, Perry Madaisky, Ken Gerbrandt, and Henry Tom.

Graham Kita announced the recipients of the competition winners. Steve Bocska for the Cecil Ackery trophy, Rick Mearns for the Charles Howard trophy, Henry Tom for the H.B.MacLean trophy, Jordan Vo for the Ray Gamble trophy, Roy Hopwood for the Tip Top and Tootsie trophy, Alex Zander for the William Shelly trophy and Gabriella Lester for the Percy Poole trophy. Gabriella Lester has now advanced into the adult category. Rod Boss presented the President’s award to Graham Kita. Congratulations to everyone.

The nominees for the Murray award for the most creative magical performance during the course of the year were Cameron Minty and Henry Tom. The winner was Henry Tom. The nominees for the Kramien award for showmanship during the course of the year were Rod Chow, Roy Hopwood, and Jordan Vo. Roy Hopwood was the winner. The nominees for the David Culos memorial trophy for the Golden Rabbit award were Simon Cassegrain, Dennis Chan, Roy Hopwood, and Graham Kita. Simon Cassegrain was the winner. Rod thanked the executive and committee members for all their support for the last two years because of the COVID-19. He also thanked the members for their dedication to the Vancouver Magic Circle.

It was now time for the swearing in of the new executive for the 2022 magic year. Presiding over the ceremony was Rod Boss and he also read out the duties and responsibilities of the new executive. The new executive for 2022 are president, Care Elise Dyck, first VP, Yoosik Oum, second VP, Simon Cassegrain, secretary, Harmony Woodington, treasurer, Roy Hopwood and sergeant-at-arms, Dennis Chan. The swearing in included a candle points of light ceremony which represents the collective wisdom and true fellowship of our organization. The group photo was taken by Henry Tom. Rod Boss performed a mentalist coin trick.

The Vancouver Magic Circle thanks all those who participated in this year’s installation and awards evening. Although this year’s event was not quite the same as in past years, it was still a prestigious and successful event.

After the meeting, Rod Boss introduced Alain Nu, our featured lecturer for the evening. Alain opened his lecture with a spoon bending effect and he also explained how to perform it. The main theme of his lecture was mentalism and card magic by using astrology, zodiac and numerology principles. He also performed a calculator effect and a book test by using those principles. Alain has books that can be purchased through his website which is posted on the Vancouver Magic Circle’s membership page. Alain thanked the Vancouver Magic Circle for inviting him to do a lecture. Rod also thanked Alain for a great lecture.

There were 28 participants at the meeting.
