May 2022 Ring Report

- Ring Report submitted by Dennis Chan -

The Vancouver Magic Circle's monthly meeting took place on Thursday, May 26, 2022.

Before the official start of the meeting, there was a jam session, then Bill Lee presented a telepathy workshop with cards. Bill is a long time member of the Vancouver Magic Circle and a past president. Everyone enjoyed Bill's presentation. Jordan Vo, our card master did a workshop on the ambitious card. He demonstrated some moves and techniques regarding this classic piece of card magic. Well done Jordan.

Then president Care Elise Dyck officially opened the meeting by greeting the members and guests. We then went into the competition.

The contest for this month was for the H.B. MacLean trophy. This trophy is awarded in recognition of excellence on close-up magic. In this competition, no playing cards or stage effects are permitted. This is an adult competition. Jordan Vo was in charge of the competition. Last year's winner, Henry Tom was the host and MC for this competition and he also read the rules. The competitors (in order of appearance) were Roy Hopwood, Robert Teszka, John Stenning, Cameron Minty and Rod Chow.

In between the performances, while the score were being tallied, Henry Tom gave an update about the upcoming conventions. They are the Stan Kramien N W Jamboree, the I.B.M. convention in Atlanta, and the FISM convention in Quebec city. He also gave a brief history of the Vancouver Magic Circle and how it got started.

The scores were tallied by computer by Care Elise Dyck and Jordan Vo. The winner of the H.B. MacLean trophy for 2022 was Robert Teszka. Congratulations to Robert and to the rest of the competitors.

After the competition, Genpei Cai performed his three tricks to qualify for his membership into the Vancouver Magic Circle. During the business portion of the meeting, Care Elise talked about the upcoming lecture with Naathan Phan on Thursday, June 9, 2022 via zoom. She also reminded the members about the June meeting and also about having a meeting in July.

Glen LaBarre did the videography. Dennis Chan took care of the refreshment table with the usual coffee and cookies. Cameron Minty brought potato biryani, which is an East Indian dish. Thanks Cameron. It was a great evening of magic.

There were 20 members and 6 guests in attendance.
